Review of “Interstellar Baby” by Plasma Chasms: A Psychedelic Soul Odyssey

185

Plasma Chasms are an indie-psychedelic band formed by Jane Drewett from Australia and Adrian Guerrero from America, and they recently released their new song called “Interstellar Baby. ” While delving into soul, R&B, combined with psychedelic pop, this track can best be described as one that captivates attention with its sound for hours.

Taking into consideration the elements of the song, “Interstellar Baby” harks back to Motown and the feel and sound of the 60s and 70s, albeit given a contemporary treatment. The lyricism is beautiful and the soulfulness of the vocal performances evoke a nostalgic feeling of the early nineties artist while original in its own right. The song manages to maintain the Australians indie pop feel and combined with an endless summer California feel making the music thick and compelling.

The interesting component of the track is instrumentation, consisting of drums, powerful lead guitar along with delightful backbeat of the percussion and horns. These elements altogether produces a melody that is so relaxing and serene just like the heedful happiness that is present in every line of the song.

Literally, yes, “Interstellar Baby” is a sweet love song, about seeing someone for the first time and immediately falling in love and wanting to give that special someone all of oneself. Their voices combine to tell the story of the two characters break down, realizing that they cannot escape each other, and come to accept their place as a unit, traveling in space. And the idea of romantic relations between stars is philosophically reflected in the track’s psych-rock music.
