Review of “Black Crow” by Mr B & The Wolf

187

The brand new single by Mr B & The Wolf entitled Black Crow is a five-minute rock masterpiece that can also be described as powerful and peaceful at the same time. In the first few seconds, the song catches your interest with the booming guitar solo and the pounding drum beat, but what follows is way more profound than a mere rock song. It is a song that asks us to reflect, to warm up and to have this feeling of simple hope.

Black Crow was recorded in the Wavebreak Studios, Essex and was written as a result of a simple riff in rehearsals developing into a full-band composition to bring out the voices of every member. The arrangement is elaborate but reserved, leaving room to all the instruments and at the same time letting the emotional mood come out. There is even an element of goofiness in it- you might want to listen to the crow sound effect hidden in the mix; it gives the recording a certain flair.

The central part of this piece is a vocal performance. The raw and expressive voice of the lead singer conveys the lyrics with utter sincerity and makes the listeners enter an emotional domain. He does not sing merely–he narrates and you can sense all the words he says. It is a moving message: the silent power of feeling that there is somebody who cares about you. This is a premier theme and it runs deep and is retained long after the final note has been played.

The song plays musically to a classic rock sound with a contemporary incarnation. The song has a sort of nostalgic feel that old rock fans will adore, but at the same time it is expressed in a modern way. Its nonchalant rhythm does not dampen the strength but creates a subtle ascending outcome, which is deep and inspirational.

Black Crow is the outstanding song by Mr B & The Wolf- calm, heartfelt, and honest. It is a reminder that rock music could still reach the heart as well as the body.
