“Grown Ups” is the final single in what Naomi Jane refers to as the “Letterman Trilogy”. Closing out the illustrative narrative begun by anthem “Pretty Boys” followed by piano ballad “Little Miss”. This guitar driven storyline in her
upcoming release carries eagerly awaiting fans full circle.
“Grown Ups,” symbolizes a journey of youthful relationships, self-discovery, and maturity. Following the themes explored in “Pretty Boys” and “Little Miss” “Grown Ups” completes the narrative arc by reflecting on the complexities and responsibilities that come with love and growing up.
In “Pretty Boys,” the protagonist deals with the disillusionment of a love that wasn’t real, capturing the pain and anger of unfulfilled expectations. “Little Miss” shifts the focus to self-empowerment and reclamation of self worth, where the protagonist asserts herself and takes control of her narrative. The vintage letterman’s jacket, a recurring symbol in Naomi Jane’s music videos, represents the boy or the love interest, and its journey mirrors the
protagonist’s emotional evolution.
“In each of my music videos I use a vintage letterman’s jacket as symbolism of a boy, any boy really. In ‘Pretty Boys’, the girl is the victim. She losses the boy that she thought he was, it’s about coming to terms and raging about a love that wasn’t real. From victim we move to ‘Little Miss’ and that song is about self-acceptance and empowerment! In ‘Little Miss’ she steals the boy, she gets the jacket, she asserts and claims her self-worth.
In ‘Grown Ups” you get to see how the story ends. She leaves the jacket. It illustrates the realization that love is bigger than a teenage love story. It shows how hard it is to find love but how easy it is to lose it. The reason I wrote this song is, I wanted to show a different side of my sound, thus ‘Grown Ups’ is a more country/folk sound. One of my biggest musical influences is Zach Bryan, a country music artist who was an influence to this song. Originally, this song was called Solo Cups. It was basically a song talking about teens, trucks, beer, and heartbreak.
