Review: Nick Marks – “Ride The Dragon” (Horatio Luna Remix

189

As 2023 comes to a close, Nick Marks, the Australian Composer, Producer, and Pianist based in New York, is on the brink of another musical adventure. Following the release of his debut single “Ride The Dragon” in February and the subsequent EP “Cinematic Chromatics Vol. I,” Marks is gearing up for more with the release of “Asymptomatrix” and an exciting sequel, “Cinematic Chromatics Vol. II,” in 2024.

For his latest endeavor, Marks enlists the creative prowess of renowned Melbourne jazzy-house producer Horatio Luna, creating an exhilarating remix of “Ride The Dragon.” The remix is an electronic dance track fused with funk/soul and techno elements, offering a sonic journey that combines the best of Quincy Jones and Thundercat on a jazzy-house cut.

The collaboration between Marks and Luna, born from their shared experiences in the Melbourne music scene, is a reunion that transcends geographic distances—New York and Melbourne unite in a sonic celebration. “Ride The Dragon (Horatio Luna Remix)” is a happy and energetic composition, exuding chill vibes that immediately captivate the listener.

One of the remix’s standout features is the inclusion of sounds from the Budapest Art Orchestra, adding an extra layer of richness to the track. The fusion of cinematic jazztronica elements with dance floor-ready beats showcases the dynamic versatility of Marks’ original creation, now reimagined for a different audience.

Marks, known for his genre-bending cinematic jazztronica, seamlessly blends the worlds of concert music, film scoring, jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, and electronica. The remix by Horatio Luna takes these influences and amplifies them for the dance floor, creating a sonic experience that is both infectious and invigorating.

In Nick Marks’ own words, “Bringing together my worlds in concert/film music with jazz, neo-soul gave birth to the original ‘Ride The Dragon’ single. I always felt there was infinite potential to flip it into a whole new direction.” Horatio Luna, with his chops, vision, and taste, elevates the track into a new dimension, delivering a remix that stands as a testament to the boundless possibilities within music.
