Kiey’s 2024 Comeback: “white boy i sat next to on the plane” – A Bittersweet Pop Poem

365

In Kiey’s much-anticipated 2024 comeback single, “white boy i sat next to on the plane,” he unveils a poignant slice of minimalistic pop poetry. Following a successful 2022-2023 run that included four music videos for the “Sunday Sanctuary” album and a Vietnamese single called “Mê Cung,”

Inspired by the likes of Troye Sivan, Lana Del Rey, Britney Spears, Utada Hikaru, and Bjork, Kiey continues to evolve his unique musical style. His 2019 debut album, “Night To Myself,” served as a love letter to the night and its mysterious depths. In contrast, the sophomore album, “Sunday Sanctuary,” took a brighter, cinematic, and uplifting electro-pop direction with catchy chord progressions. Now, for his third album, Kiey takes a different route, experimenting with a simpler, instrumental indie sound featuring laidback drums, pianos, and strings through loops and samples. The preview of this new direction is evident in the single “white boy i sat next to on the plane.”

The song itself tells a captivating story—a hypnotic, bittersweet, and minimalistic pop record drawn from Kiey’s personal experience on a plane. In this musical tale, Kiey confesses to obsessing over a captivating guy seated across the aisle. The lyrics paint an alternate reality where Kiey bravely introduced himself, sparking a beautiful relationship. However, the reality is that shyness held him back, leaving the fantasy to exist solely within the poetic realm of the song. As “white boy i sat next to on the plane” unfolds, it provides a glimpse into Kiey’s evolving artistic journey and a promising preview of what his upcoming album has in store.
