Hughdem Returns With Soulful, Eclectic Debut Project– A Tribute To Dilla

358

Hampshire-based producer/artist Hughdem returns with his first solo project, “Enter The Dillaverse” – a 7-track release which pays homage to one of his greatest influences, J Dilla. A love letter to the works of the legendary Detroit producer, this project pays tribute to Jay Dee while establishing his own aesthetic as an artist.

Lead single, “My Star” is an innovative interpretation of a Jaylib classic – over soulful
samples, big 808’s and a danceable rhythm, the sincere love song tells the tale of a new relationship from first meet to first dates and couple habits. The production is varied, using half-time breakdowns and a bass-heavy outro to keep the listeners hooked.

You can hear the influence of wordplay and picture painting, honest lyrics from artists like J.
Cole, Mac Miller and early Drake. This song stands out as the most radio-worthy on an EP reimagining 7 classic Dilla joints, taking them on a journey through Hughdem’s left-field production style, travelling through soulful boom bap, psychedelic trap, alt-R&B and spacey hip hop.

As much a personal project as a tribute, his punchy lyrics draw on experiences and tales
of youthful memories, city life, romance, social commentary, dead ends, and chasing your dreams. Showing a range of emotions, from heartfelt reflections and brooding to MC bravado and cypher-ready verses, all peppered with bouncy flows and wordplay throughout.

A cohesive yet varied collection of tracks, this EP makes for an interesting cosmic tour made with the vision of an artist and the love of a fan. “Enter The Dillaverse” is now available on all streaming platforms.
