Review of MARIAA SIGA & ODDY’s Collaborative Album

324

After listening to the incredible musical creations of MARIAA SIGA and ODDY, their teamwork is showcased about the struggles of immigrants in five different versions of a very touching song. The MARIAA SIGA feature here is on the lyrical aspect, while ODDY is on the music part, and the music production under Odyssée Records. It is a true example of how music medium can be used as a tool for enlightening the public and making remarks on their lives issues.

An immigrant’s life is dramatic, and MARIAA SIGA draws that drama in her lyrics to open the album. Her natural and distinctive voice makes the songs believable and convincing, making the audience into active participants in the songs’ narratives.

Both performances are quite different, and therefore each version of the composition gives rather different listening experience. Rhythm and atmosphere are also introduced to the tracks through Rascat and ODYY’s dub interpretations further deepening the tracks’ layers. This affected version makes the song even more vulnerable, and the acoustic accompaniment focuses all the listener’s attention on the lyrics. The Nyahbinghi version adds a certain liveliness and accompaniment to the overall performance; this is in fact vivid and animated and quite different from the original version.

It is an interesting and valuable work because this album is created for those people who like to listen to music with a good meaning and faultless sound. The dancers’ creativity evident in this program proved an effective method of breaking the barriers of culture and music to present a piece that is universally captivating to the viewers.

All in all, this is an impressive project that revolve around the themes of entertainment, professed by the musicians, and education, shared by this listener, concerning the issue of immigration through music.
