“Favorite Things” by Attack the Sound: A Fresh Take on a Classic

43

Chicago’s indie pop darlings, Attack the Sound, have taken a crack at a standard to create their new single “Favorite Things.” This piece derives from the popular track from the popular musical of the Sound of Music as well as Coltrane’s jazz versed treatment to it.

The initial structure of the song is also prospective; the melodic backing is mainly jazz, which really gets the feel started. Floating addictive tremolo sweeps into a dreamy aspect offers audiences the feeling of weightlessness needed to enter the realm of serenity. The mastering is in full response to vocal more than ever as the voice itself is silky sultry soul which roots the song fully while solos and horn section ramps up the energy, intricacy of the track. This creates a balance between the old nostalgic songs and the new sophisticated noise making music that is all jazz, soul and indie pop.

I think that the first thing that sets “Favorite Things” apart is how quickly one can hear the switch between these genres with the band. Performing jazz fusion heavy on Chicago styles – jazz, hip-hop, blues, gospel & indie pop – Shrewsbury demonstrates Chicago’s dynamism. The track appears to hark back to old times at the same time it is progressive in a sense, and produces something new.

The band proved dedication to their artistry with this recording, as the song was recorded live without a tension.” This raw and very real energy is captured in the final output- thus, “Favorite Things” isn’t just a rendition of the original but it is a remix.

If you are in search of a new vibrant, zestful music then ‘Favorite Things’ by the newly formed band – Attack the Sound is perfect for you. It’s just a lovely tribute to Coltrane and his creativity bringing the band’s personality into the fold.
