On his latest single “Lookin’ For A Devil,” singer-songwriter Ben Gage offers a laid-back, thumpin’ country meditation on desperation, dead ends, and the fine print in any deal worth making. Set to a dusty acoustic groove and featuring the unmistakable guitar work of Anthony Papaleo, the song tells the story of a man ready to trade his soul, but finding no takers.
“I wrote this one while thinking about all the times I tried to get ahead by cutting corners, and even the devil had
better offers on the table,” Gage says. “There’s rent due, the drinks are empty, and you’re still stuck waiting for a break that never shows.”
With its stripped-down arrangement and steady-motion rhythm, “Lookin’ For A Devil” leans into the well-worn spirit
of the road, adding another chapter to the travel-stained narrative of Gage’s upcoming album. Equal parts worldweary and darkly funny, the song captures the kind of quiet exasperation that hits hardest when you’ve done everything right, and still come up short.
