Veteran soul powerhouse and electrifying performer Connie Brannock drops her latest single “Basketball”, a groove-heavy, funk-infused tribute to hoops culture that’s sure to get both ballers and music lovers moving.
From the rhythm of pickup games in the park to the chaos of March Madness, “Basketball” is a gritty celebration of the soul of the sport—featuring live drums, a thick bass groove, and a fiery guest rap from Tucson’s own Shaun Harris. The track pulses with street swagger and sonic intensity, making it the perfect soundtrack for anyone who lives for the game—on the blacktop, in the bleachers, or courtside.
“I wanted to capture that feeling—the swagger, the sweat, the pure joy of the game,” says Brannock. “Basketball isn’t just a sport—it’s culture, it’s connection, it’s poetry in motion. And this song is my love letter to that.”
Known for her saucy lyrics and commanding stage presence, Connie Brannock has been turning heads since her high school days when her band Luke rocked the Mid-Atlantic scene from Philly to Virginia Beach. In the late ’70s, she headed west, sharing stages with the Bill Brown Band and later forming the fiery group Connie and the Rhythm Method. Her music journey took her across iconic venues from San Francisco to the Hollywood Palace in Los Angeles.
In 1986, Brannock won the Stroh’s Superstar Talent Search and signed with MCA Records before taking a surprising turn—enlisting in the military just before her 35th birthday. She went on to serve 21 years, including two deployments during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and is widely respected for her powerful leadership and mentorship.
Now based in Tucson, Brannock is back in full creative force, drawing inspiration from the greats—Sly and the Family Stone, Laura Nyro, Carole King, Jeff Lorber, and Patrice Rushen. “Basketball” is the latest in a string of bold, vibrant releases that showcase her unmatched energy and range.
