D Maz is back with another fierce single titled “Sugar and Bitter” an intense & heavily lyrical piece as the artist juxtaposes the sweetness of love with the bitter side we tend to experience. Drawing from this basic, but engaging arrangement, the song sets up a good rhythm, backbeat, synthesizers and a groovy bass line for D Maz to do his thing with bar after bar of dope lyricism.
This very simplistic and sterile work amalgamates enough rawness where D Maz details the toxic nature of a relationship. His verses go further and delves into the continued wars, the most brutal of betrayals and the tiredness that comes with generosity with no reciprocation. It is a perfectly simple, even though very concrete story which speaks to everybody, or at least did for me, and it is passionate and funny.
Lines like “I used to think love was a chain, but I found the key…unlocked myself…now I’m finally free” and “Promised me the stars… gave me nothing but your debts” illustrate the themes of a failed relationship, and he sings all this rage in full control.
Lyrically, this one rolls with a good bass and snare that’d make you bob your head to. Limited instrumentation of beats and synths puts emphasis on passion in D Maz’s lyrics as he turns bad breakups into a celebration.
This track is evidence to D Maz that despite what he is going through and what he has been through, he has a talent for lyricism. These feelings can either be due to toxic love or simply the love of a good beat and “Sugar and Bitter” captures both aspects perfectly and with a lot of energy.
Prepare for the bass and guitar because D Maz’s new single is a banger for everyone’s playlist.
