Dead Storm Rising Reimagines a Cult Classic with Haunting Power in “11 Ton Butterfly”

317

Dead Storm Rising returns with an equally strong newest release, exploring the depths of darkness of emotion and loss. Their rendition of ‘11 Ton Butterfly’ by Mindfunk, is not just a tribute, it’s an overhaul, loaded in the weight of sorrow, reflection and raw energy.

Led on by their alter egos– Wraith (Guitars, Bass, Drums), Kitsune (Keys, Strings, Vocals), and Raze (Lead Vocals), the band puts music forward and sound and atmosphere take the lead. Such focus lets “11 Ton Butterfly” to shine as dark, melodiously deep journey mixing heavy metal grit with dark, brooding melodies.

Recorded in Seattle by Wraith and mixed/mastered in Hollywood by Stephan Hawkes, this is a sonic journey. Its intro is a slow and intense guitar intro that creates a moody atmosphere and is followed by a layered storm of thundering drums and thick basslines. The textures of Kitsune create a haunting depth, yet Raze continues the journey in what may well be a gripping vocal performance that carries the aspirations of metal icons like James Hetfield with theaced chill of Alice In Chains.

The structure of the song leaves room for it to breathe; unlike many modern songs restricted by the short running times, “11 Ton Butterfly” takes several minutes – enough for the listener to dive into its weight. Each of the sections creates tension and emotion with a full musical tale that resonates for a long time after the music ends.

Dead storm Rising doesn’t have one of the best albums ever written in its discography, they transform one. “11 Ton Butterfly” is a thrilling piece of style/intentionality; a nostalgic roll call for the new. It is essential listening for enthusiasts of the heavy/emotive stuff, and the ideal introduction for those that do not know the haunting universe of the band.
