The Numb Project’s new album A Space Between is a gorgeous, relaxing trip in soft beats, full sounds and deep feelings. Designed by Portland-based producer Chris Calarco, 12-track album mixes downtempo, lo-fi, ambient and chill hip hop into a calm and reflective listening.
Right from the first track “A Monkst”, things take a turn to a universe of shimmering synths and as peaceful rhythms. The song introduces piano and soft beats which slowly opens up the rest of the album. Another long-ago track, “All Souls,” continues that air forward with grace and lo-fi likability.
One of the album’s best moments is “Bloom” mixing spacey sounds with a sombre beat. It evokes a mood that is a bit meditative and quite emotional, and great for wind-down or day dreams. I quite like the more cheerful jolt of “Bowling for Time”, which continues to carry the calming vibe.
The last track “5 AM” is the tender and beautiful final to the album. It applies soft textures, light percussion to give it a sense of peace and quiet meditation, kind of a whisper to conclude the ride.
That is what makes A Space Between special – every sound is thought through. Calarco in collaboration with mixers and mastering engineers constructs each track with warm analog tones and quiet beats. The album here lets silence and space speak as loudly as the music.
Finally, A Space Between is more than music. It’s an all body experience to help you calm, breathe and reflect. It’s great for after-midnight drives or peaceful mornings or whenever you want those moments of tranquility from the outside world. This is music to feel not to hear.
