Jazz singer-songwriter Heather Ferguson is thrilled to announce today the release of her monthly single releases, “Ghost City.” This song, composed and written by Ferguson, showcases her soaring vocals and her storytelling
chops. “Ghost City” features an exceptional lineup of Victoria musicians including Attila Fias on piano, Scott White on upright bass, Damian Graham on drums, and Miguelito Valdes on flugelhorn, congas and /scraper. The arrangement by Attila Fias brings a unique texture to the song, while studio producer and engineer Wynn Gogol ensures a polished and immersive listening experience.

Inspired by a visit to Everglades City in Florida, Ferguson’s “Ghost City” speaks to the fascinating and turbulent history of the region. Once a bustling fishing community, Everglades City faced significant economic hardship when commercial fishing was banned in Everglades National Park. The struggle of the local fishermen, who turned to drug
smuggling to survive, is poignantly captured in the song’s lyrics.

Heather Ferguson reflects, “Walking around Everglade City was like stepping into a field of dreams. Originally, the place was being promoted as a possible state capital and they built public buildings inspired by that dream. But the backstory of the fishermen’s plight was even more compelling. It inspired me to write ‘Ghost City’ to capture both the dream and the struggle of this unique place.”

In addition to its historical inspiration, the song subtly weaves in elements of Florida’snatural beauty, including the iconic American flamingos often seen along the state’s coast and within the Everglades, Biscayne Bay, and the Florida Keys. The nostalgic reference to the Flamingo is captured in Ferguson’s album art (Photo by Christine MacLeod and Graphics by Alethea Wilson). The Ceramic Flamingo was made by Lane & Co. in the 1950s
and 1960s adds a touch of vintage charm to the narrative.

“Ghost City” is now available on all major streaming platforms. Heather Ferguson invites listeners to explore the hauntingly beautiful world of Everglade City through her music and to experience the rich tapestry of history, nature, and emotion that defines her latest release.
