About Mariaa Siga

The brilliance of Casamance’s vocal pearl From her homeland, Casamance, to Europe, MARIAA SIGA has lived a dazzling trajectory over the last 10 years. From the first contests of artists in Senegal to The Voice in France, passing through the One Riddim Contest of the reggae label Baco Records, from her nominations for the Victoires du Reggae to the final of the RFI Discovery Prize, this young artist has climbed through the ranks with incredible maturity. It must be said that his voice and his musical approach reveal themselves wonderfully in Diola’s rhythms, as well as blues, folk-jazz inspirations and even roots-reggae flights.

The wide range of quality world music. In acoustic or electric, Mariaa Siga knows how to place this deep and evocative vocal timbre that resonates as the great marker of West African music. Mariaa Siga is a young artist from Casamance. She is an author, songwriter and performer.

In 2009, she won a talent contest and was discovered by group manager Jeanne d’Arc (Senegal), who helped her refine her style and develop her musical skills. Already accustomed to the traditional rhythms of her hometown, her curiosity led her to discover new musical styles such as reggae, blues or jazz, which she fuses with African sounds.

Her artistic approach brings her closer to the world of world music. In 2016, she was one of the springboard winners of the Festival des Vieilles Pirogues in Saly. In 2018 she really breaks the scene by performing every week at a restaurant in Saly, in November she performs for the first time in France at the Cité de La Musique in Marseille, where she headlines the Festival Boukout.

In 2019 Mariaa won the One Riddim Contest on the Baco Records label and her track “La Révolte” appeared on the compilation alongside big names in reggae. He has toured extensively in Senegal, Morocco, France and Canada, participated in numerous festivals (MarocFolies, Festival des Nomades, Festival Mondial des Femmes de Montréal) and performed on renowned stages (Institut Français de Marrakech, Club Balattou, Cabaret Lion d ‘ or). On October 4 of the same year she released ASEKAW (“woman” in Diola), her first album which received a very good response from the press and the public.

In 2020, Mariaa won the Women’s World Cup on March 11 at Parker Place in Abidjan. During confinement, she holds several virtual concerts that attract many fans. She also participates in the Solidarity Project with several artists from the French reggae scene. On June 7, she released “Wama”, the first video from her album. During the summer, she does a 5-date mini tour of France, which ends with the first part of Flavia Coelho at the Mas des Escaravatiers. In November, “Lagne Boote” is released, recorded at the Vagh & Weinmann studio with the support of the African Culture Fund.

In 2021 she was nominated for the Victoires du Reggae in the International Artist of the Year category, won the jury prize at the Nuits du Sud Festival, was one of the 10 finalists of the RFI Discovery Prize and was selected for MAPAS in the Canaries and the Musical Days of Carthage . She performs around thirty concerts in Africa, Europe and Canada. She is also one of the 7 artists selected for the Jazz Women in Africa project in Morocco.
