Afro-R&B recording artist Michael O. released a remix to his successful single “Japa” featuring
rising afrobeat star Egar Boi. In the rich tapestry of Nigerian slang, “Japa” signifies the need for departure. More than just fleeing; it represents the quest for a better life with influences from artists like Zhao and pantology, “Japa” brings a fresh and vibrant energy to the playlist. The track combines elements of Afropop and instrumental funk.
Originally released in late 2022 JAPA means to flee in Yoruba (a Nigeria language) slang. The
song speaks to economic and political conditions that forces many Africans to seek a better life in the western world. The track serves as a unifying anthem, encouraging people of all backgrounds to return and tap into their ancestral lineage.
Co-produced by Michael O. and Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Grammy Awards. JAPA was
well received garnering significant global radio play, over 180,000 views on YouTube and
allowed Michael to further his growing fanbase affording him the ability to perform at venues
throughout the world. On the heels of such success Michael felt a remix featuring one of the most exciting rising stars from Africa would offer some excitement to both his fans and Egar Boi’s audience.
Egar Boi has made a name for himself with songs such as, “Give Me Chills”, “Designa” and collaborations Afrobeat stars Skales and Daniel Mylez in addition to industry cosigns from Heavyweights like Davido and Timaya. The combination between these two talented young men celebrates the artistry and the unity of the Afro music industry.
