Jon Thorstensen, a talented Norwegian composer, jazz guitarist, and pianist, is known for his passion in pushing the boundaries and exploring the links between jazz and various other styles.
In his latest EP, Clouds, Thorstensen delves into a musical journey that encompasses funk, jazz rock, prog, and rock, while maintaining a strong jazz foundation.
Clouds EP showcases the versatility and artistry of Thorstensen’s compositions. The tracks traverse different musical landscapes, taking the listener on a captivating sonic adventure.
For instance, “The Return of Laura Palmer” introduces a cinematic ambiance, while “Fungus Novus” explores contemporary and almost atonal musical territories. The compositions range from tightly arranged jazz rock and prog jazz to looser and more ethereal instrumental jazz.
Collaborating with the exceptional musician and pianist Erlend Gjerde (known for his work with Bugge Wesseltoft, Vidar Busk, and Wenche Myhre), Thorstensen adds depth and color to the songs. Gjerde’s minimalist “sound paintings” on Rhodes electric piano, acoustic piano, grand piano, synths, and synth bass create a unique atmosphere that blends seamlessly with Thorstensen’s vision.
The recordings took place in Gamlebyen, Fredrikstad, under the guidance of esteemed producer Kyrre Fritzner (known for his work with DeLillos, CC Cowboys, and The Rambelins), and Thorstensen himself in his own home studio. The album was produced, mixed, and mastered by Kyrre Fritzner in FMV Studio.
Since the release of his jazz album Spark in February 2022, Thorstensen’s music has resonated with audiences worldwide, reaching over 70 countries through international playlists, radio stations, music blogs, and magazines.
Listeners have praised the sophistication and surprising musical solutions found in Thorstensen’s compositions, highlighting his ability to create innovative and captivating pieces.
The talented musicians on the Clouds EP contribute their expertise to the project. Erlend Gjerde showcases his mastery on various keyboards, including Rhodes electric piano, acoustic piano, grand piano, synths, and synth bass.
Kyrre Fritzner adds his rhythmic expertise through drums, percussion, drum programming, and synth work. Meanwhile, Jon Thorstensen serves as the composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, showcasing his skills on electric guitar, double bass, organ, electric and acoustic piano, and other keys.
