Swiss artist Alexandre Sumi is opening a new chapter in his musical story with Los Hermanos del Alma, a project born in the heart of Cuba in 2019. What started as a creative exchange between Sumi, his brother Fred, and Cuban musicians quickly evolved into something much deeper — a meeting of cultures, rhythms, and souls. The result is a sound that’s vibrant, heartfelt, and unlike anything else.
The group’s new album, Oya, is a bold fusion of Afro-Cuban rock, Afrobeat, Latin jazz, and soul, recorded in full immersion in Havana. It’s a musical UFO — daring, diverse, and full of life. From the first note, Oya invites listeners into a world where ancestral rhythms meet modern grooves, where Cuban heat merges with European artistry.
Originally known as SUMO, the band was formed in the late ’90s by brothers Alex (guitar, vocals) and Fred Sumi (bass, production). Over the years, they’ve explored many genres — from electro and soul to trip-hop and dub — always staying true to their open-minded, exploratory spirit. Their previous Cuban tours at Habanarte Festival (2016) and Cubadisco (2017) laid the foundation for deep friendships and collaborations that would later shape Los Hermanos del Alma.
Although Fred departed in 2021 to pursue his solo project Edkub, Alexandre continues the journey with a new lineup of talented Latin musicians active across Europe, including Ramon Plaza (drums), Juan Pablo Cisneros (bass), and Eulogio “Mamby” Arguelles Puey (percussion), among others.
Together, they bring Los Hermanos del Alma — “The Brothers of the Soul” — to life: a family united by rhythm, passion, and the universal language of music.
