Review of Eleri Ward’s new single “There You Go”

267

This release is Eleri Ward’s fresh single ”There You Go” in which she leaves behind acoustic Sondheim songs that she is famous for. It is a track which presents her new studio album and gives rather deep insight into her soul and Code of her life including the most important life values such as gratitude, karma and humility. It’s a hilariously satirical look at privilege; it also challenges it in a cool and fun package that rhymes.

One of the core aspects regarding the structure and the internal details of the song is basically impossibility to rightly label its firth: the song is created in the marvel 5/4 time, and does not follow linear logic in a sharp and evident way, it is almost impossible to know what is going to happen next. As for the lyrics, Ward is up to the challenge and does an incredible job at navigating the – at times – dizzying rhythms and melodies of the song. She controls her vocal cords as an instrument, and layers the song with emotions and thought.

Musically, “There You Go” over the shimmying synths, hammering piano and expertly neat production, forms yet a warm and vigorous vibe. It is dark, dreamy, full of Needed Me style atmospheric guitar work but, at the same time, contains arguably some of the more clever wordplay in pop music. Because of syncopated rhythm with varied dynamics the attention is captured and the stories of contemporary pop music narrated in a new way.

Ward sings with an authentic, raw voice here and indeed he writes a song, which must surely strike a chord with many people. The song connects moments when she is in her internal struggle with the moments of tension and excitement of finding herself. Her talent to juxtaposition sarcasm with music rhythms makes her unique in the pop music industry.

“There You Go” is a great message about growth, but also about non-egotism and genuine personality. Given what is appealing about this production and Ward herself, this song means a new and interesting chapter for her as a performer.
