Cardiff queercores’ Small Miracles are back with ‘Bisexual Panic’ – an explosive 104-second riot of fury, identity, and punk firepower. Shedding sonic blood with each pulse, this song is a purge of heat created by the hounding on the street, and shade of toxic masculinity. It’s more than a song – it’s a scream, it’s a refusal, it’s a battle cry.
‘Bisexual Panic’ produced by Andrew Sanders, roars through its runtime with the ferocity of a Molotov cocktail of retro punk influence, the raw energetic chaos of the Sex Pistols, the bite of early Manic Street Preachers, and the uncut punch of IDLES. Scorching guitars scrape through brick walls of crashing drums while vocalist Fatale spits each line with a vengeance in her sharp teeth. The outcome is immediate and furious, and completely addictive.
Lyrically, the song explores deep scars in the society, sexual repression, queer identity, and fear which drives aggression. It is the fantasy of saying what I wanted in those moments; that’s what Fatale says of their encounter with harassment. That fantasy is turned into the weapon, in ‘Bisexual panic’, where fear is turned upside down and transformed into strength.
Composed originally as a gig for Joe & The Shitboys, the track keeps its origins: trashy, raw, and defiantly unpolished. However, in that noise lurks a message that brings you down to your core – on survival, rage, taking your voice back.
Disconcertingly short, sharp, and dripping with sweat, ‘Bisexual Panic’ makes an impression. It is a shout of rebellion against a world which all too often hides and muters queer tongues – and it must be heard at full volume.
