Everyone who is familiar with Chicago-based singer-songwriter TE/MO and her spooky, cerebral pop sound will be enchanted by her latest two EPs “TAROT, UPRIGHT” and “TAROT, REVERSED”. This involves topics of emancipation, romance, infidelity, and introspection which are the principles of the tarot ‘upright’ and ‘reversal’. All tracks on the EPs are coupled by a “sister song” which is another track addressing the same topic: from self-confidence to heartbreak.
The side named “The Upright” begins with “Devil”, which, by its tarot reference, addresses the theme of personal emancipation, as people create most of the walls for themselves. In all, the songs “My Name” is about TE/MO embracing the self and “Sister on Fire” is for those who are raging against the system. “Written in the Cards” and “Can I Do UR Chart” are also feel of destiny and chaotic romance intertwined with bit of mysticism and lot of unveiling and unveiling.
“The Reversed” side of the EP is its darker side, as most of the songs reflect betrayal, inner reflection, or some kind of loss. “Curse” recounts the anger one may feel after a major betrayal, “King of Swords” looks at the pain inflicted by our loved ones. TE/MO humorously explore the signs for getting back together in “Signs” and “Judgment” and “Witch Trial” depict the emotional side of being judged or persecuted for love.
Made in collaboration with JP Warner and Joey Chelius in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Chicago, the EPs are thick with depth. TE/MO’s new track, TAROT, UPRIGHT & REVERSED tells the story of the highs and the lows of life, the harmony and the discord in an very moving and almost surreal way. By challenging the duality of existence in her songs, TE/MO encourages her listeners to ponder their existential reality making her newest EPs one that defies the listener’s attention.
