“Quicksand”, the latest single by The Dave Black Expression, is a deeply personal song about the kind of relationship many of us experience — especially during the dating years. Things start off well, with excitement and high hopes, but reality soon shows a different picture. Even when the signs point elsewhere, we often try to steer things toward the happy ending we imagined — only to realize the situation has a life of its own.
The song was born in an unexpected moment. Dave Black, the group’s frontman, was waiting for a friend for coffee — someone he had just met and felt a connection with. She was late, and after about 30 minutes, she texted to say she’d be there soon. During that wait, Dave began to reflect on the nature of these hopeful yet uncertain relationships, jotting down notes that would later become “Quicksand.”
“I wasn’t sure what genre the song should be,” Dave explains. “It sat for a while until one day I thought — why not blend a reggae beat with some indie influence? That mix became the foundation of our new sound and our Sixth Sense album.”
Though the relationship didn’t work out as hoped, Dave says the experience helped him confront self-doubt and move forward. “Quicksand” became a turning point — not just for him personally, but for the band’s musical identity.
The result is what the group calls “romantic reggae” — a heartfelt mix of reggae rhythms and indie melodies, with a reflective touch that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
“It’s a song about looking back, learning, and knowing there’s always something new ahead,” Dave shares. “We’re proud of how it turned out, and we hope it resonates with anyone who’s ever felt stuck in the emotional pull of a relationship that didn’t go as planned.”
