Whisky Por Favor, the experimental band by a Spanish singer and guitarist Javier Burón and a Scottish guitarist Innes Cardno presents their self-titled studio album captured in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, London, and Madrid. This completely independent release is planned to be no less close to real attendance of Whisky Por Favor’s concert, it is offering the variety of tracks of their unique music which is filled with the roots of the band’s cultures in strongest and captivating sound.
The album starts off with “Matadero” and its dark and full of exciting tone and attitude that pays great attention to catchy rhythms and smooth. Starting from the intro which features soft strings accompanied by vocals, the strings’ types and rhythm are changed several times, although, the singer’s tone remains stable. The second song, also named ‘Jota’, presents a similar beat, and the strings play a star role here. The third song “Todo El Mundo Sabe” has a high energy compared to the first two songs, and it is characterized by alternating dynamics that make it different from the other two tracks.
This energetic feel is then kept intact in the fourth song titled “The Northern Light of Aberdeen” and continues the tradition of diversification of the album. As for the last track titled “El Síndrome Del Emigrado,” the album wraps up joyously, and it is also cinematic where the duo is at their most intense. The string work here carries a sense of flame and tautness like a classic Western movie whilst the tiered vocals raise the bar in terms of melody complexity and surge towards a sparkling chorus.
“Gavotte Montagne” is a fully instrumental song which is represent as guitar works with additional drum, synth and saxophone instruments and creates an entertaining effect. The sixth song “Todo Va Bien” begins differently than the previous songs with a vocal line without the accompaniment of other instruments, and has a rather less intense instrumentation.
Throughout the entire album, Whisky Por Favor does an incredibly competent job with the combination of the Spanish and Latin American beats with the traditional Scottish tunes. Their music is also a love letter to their own cultures and love for music by creating perhaps one of the only albums ever that does not fit into any genre anymore and builds something completely new.
